Rev. Ernest E. "Ernie/Butch" Flowers, 90, of Hillsboro, Illinois, formerly of Vandalia, Illinois, passed away Sunday, December 27, 2020, at Hillsboro Area Hospital, Hillsboro, IL.
Private family graveside services will be held at Glendale Cemetery, Fillmore, IL. Memorials: Bethel Baptist Church, and/or Glendale Cemetery. Miller Funeral Home, Vandalia, IL, is in charge of arrangements. Online memories and condolences may be shared with the family at www.millerfh.net.
He was born June 30, 1930, in Fillmore, IL, (the house he lived in for 44 years) the son of Curtis Everett & Lula Pearl (Wilburn) Flowers. Married Joyce LaDon Root on January 27, 1952, in Fillmore, IL. He attended school in Fillmore, IL, graduating in 1948.
Ernie began as a farmer and was called to preach in January of 1956, starting in 1957 at Van Burensburg and he was there for 10 years; Bethel Baptist Church from 1966-1986, he took classes to obtain his Associates Degree in Pastoral Ministries during that time graduating in 1983.
Ernest then became Director of Missions for Rehoboth Association for 12 years, retiring in 1997.
He was a former Boy Scout leader; served on Nokomis School Board for 9 1/2 years; IL Baptist State Board for 15 years; Nominating committee for Southern Baptist National Convention; Baptist Foundation Board; and Board of Directors on the Baptist Children's Home for 26 years.
The Lord was #1 in his life, then his family. Not only was his family special to him, but he loved his church families also. After retiring he enjoyed playing golf and had a fine skill and craftsmanship for making oak furniture. He and Joyce traveled the country to watch kids, grandkids, and great grandkids participate in sports and other events. He was very proud of his family.
He is survived by: Wife - Joyce Flowers, Hillsboro, IL; Sons - Mike Flowers & Marcia, Lucas, TX, Rick Flowers & Debbie, Mayfield, KY, John Flowers & LuAnn, Memphis, TN, and Bruce Flowers, Emory, TX; Daughter - Tina Hagemeier & Curt, Morrisonville, IL; 11 Grandchildren; and 35 Great Grandchildren.
Preceded in death by: Parents; and 5 Brothers.
