Jerry Edward Maas, 86, of Vandalia, Illinois, passed away Saturday, July 9, 2022, at Fayette County Hospital, in Vandalia, IL.
Services will be held at 11:00 AM, Saturday, July 16, 2022, at Bethel Baptist Church, Rt. 185, Vandalia, IL with Dr. Ben Foxworth officiating. Burial will follow at Little Flock Cemetery, Moweaqua, IL, with Military Rites by Moweaqua American Legion Post #370. Visitation will be held from 9:00 AM to 11:00 AM, Saturday, July 16, 2022, prior to the service at Bethel Baptist Church, Vandalia, IL. Memorials: Bethel Baptist Church and/or Baptist Children's Home, Carmi, IL. Miller Funeral Home, Vandalia, IL, is in charge of arrangements. He was born December 13, 1935, in Sandoval, IL, the son of Charles Carl & Helen Irene (Martin) Maas. Married Jessie Lou Thomas on December 25, 1958, in Patoka, IL. Jerry worked from a young age delivering coal to houses and helping farm. He worked at the Sandoval Theatre and Drive-in; trained as a meat cutter and worked at Bracy's in Centralia, Martin's in Patoka and Day & Night Supermarket in Vandalia; Managed the Deli/Bakery/Catering at Harmon's IGA; Restaurant/catering manager at Ponderosa and Cafe 51, all in Vandalia, IL and worked for Hollywood Candy.
Jerry had a long list of activities including: Lions Club District 1-C Officer; Blood Donation - O Neg; Sandoval Fire Dept.-1955 (Fireman of the year); Boy Scout Leader; President of Fayette Co. Hospital Auxiliary - donated a new ambulance; 1812 Society and Sons of the American Revolution; U.S. Army Veteran, First Infantry 16th. Division 1958-60 (Big Red One); Member of Bethel Baptist Church, former member of Temple Baptist Church, Chairman of Deacons and Senior Adult Pastor - First Baptist Church, Hospital Visits, Bus Trips and Long Term Care Services, all of Vandalia, IL.
He is survived by: Wife - Jessie Maas, Vandalia, IL; Son - Charles Maas & Randi, Bloomington, IL; Daughter - Jerri Lyn Radtke & Bill, Oak Forest, IL; Grandchildren - Amber Wehrle, Jessica Davis & Collin, Aimee Sampson & Tug, William Joseph Radtke, Cameron Michael Hernandez, Tyler Maas & Andrea, Lorna Nicole Radtke and Jeremiah Allen Maas; 8 Great Grandchildren; and 1 Great Great Grandchild On-the-way.
Preceded in death by: His Parents; and 2 Brothers - Donald Lee Maas and Jimmy Neil Maas.
