William D. "Beeb" Staff, 82, of Carbondale, IL, formerly of Vandalia, IL, passed away Friday, April 12, 2013, at his home. Services will be held at 10:30 AM Tuesday, April 16, 2013, at First United Methodist Church, Vandalia, with The Rev. Dr. Philip Nordstrom; The Rev. John Nordstrom; and Rev. Dr. Roger Grimmett, officiating. Burial will follow at Fairlawn Cemetery, Vandalia, IL. Visitation will be held from 9:00 to 10:30 AM, Tuesday, April 16, 2013, at First United Methodist Church. Memorials: Donor's Choice or Hospice of Southern, IL Inc., 305 S. Illinois St., Belleville, IL 62220-2159. Bill was born September 29, 1930, in Bluff City, IL, the son of Floyd F. and Edna (Funk) Staff. He married his high school sweetheart, Billye Brooks, on December 13, 1952, in Vandalia, IL. He was a graduate of Vandalia High School, Class of 1949, he attended Greenville College, graduating in 1952. A Veteran of the Korean Conflict, Bill served in the U.S. Army at Camp Breckinridge, KY and in Korea. Following discharge from the Army in 1954, he began a teaching/coaching career in Altamont, IL, moving to Ottawa, IL, in 1958, where he continued this career, retiring in 1988. He also was a graduate of Rhema Bible College/Kingsway Theological Seminary, becoming an ordained minister in 1988 and served as an assistant pastor at FUMC, Ottawa, IL. After moving to Carbondale, he became a member of Christ Community Church, Murphysboro, IL. As an athlete, Beeb was inducted into the Vandalia High School Hall of Fame, Greenville College Hall of Fame and as a coach, into the Illinois Basketball Coaches Hall of Fame. He was a member of Illinois Education Association and National Education Association. As a volunteer, he was an active sponsor of F.C.A., a Bible Study leader at Vandalia Correctional Center, a Chaplain at Fayette Co. Hospital and served as a visiting preacher at many churches. He is survived by: Wife, Billye; Son: Michael "Mike" Brooks Staff and Kathy; Daughter: Minna Sue Staff; Grandchildren: Andrew Staff and Amber; and Colleen Kemp and Zach; Great Grandchildren: Rosie and William Staff and Eloise Kemp, all of Carbondale, IL; Brother: Jim Staff and Joyce; Sister: Melody Freeman and Phil, all of Vandalia, IL; Step-Brother: Bill Hunter and Mary Ruth, Edwardsville, IL; Step-Brother-in-law: David Fleming, Litchfield, IL; Sisters-in-law: Pat Staff, Springfield, IL, Iris Rademacher and Bill, Vandalia, IL, and Betty Darling and Don, Carbondale, IL; Several Nephews and Nieces. Preceded in death by: Parents; Parents-in-law: Coral and Opal Brooks; Brother: Floyd Gene Staff; Step-Sister: Felma Nell Fleming and Step-Mother: Edythe (Hunter) Staff.
