Russell E. Hewitt, 93, of Vandalia, Illinois, passed away Sunday, November 09, 2014, at Vandalia, IL. Services will be held at 11:00 AM Thursday, November 13, 2014, at First United Methodist Church, Vandalia, with Pastor Terry Westerfield, officiating. Burial will follow at Fairlawn Cemetery, Vandalia, IL, with Military Rites. Visitation will be held from 10:00 AM to 11:00 AM, 1 hr before service, Thursday, November 13, 2014, at the church. Memorials: Vandalia American Legion and/or First United Methodist Church, Vandalia, IL. Miller Funeral Home, Vandalia, IL, is in charge of arrangements. He was born September 12, 1921, in Georgetown, IL, the son of William R. & Beulah (Branham) Hewitt. Married Juanita Vivian McLemore on July 09, 1943, Troy, KS, she passed away April 7, 2006. He later married Pauline "Polly" Hopkins, she passed away December 10, 2011. Russell was a retired Teacher; Life Long Building Trades Teacher; Vandalila School Dist.-Athletic Director, Avid Athletic Coach in many Sports-Wrestling, Tennis & Football; Vandalia Correctional Center Teacher; former employee of Leo Brown Lumber & First National Bank, both in Vandalia; a Member of First United Methodist Church, Vandalia; Methodist Men & Sunday School Teacher; Temperance Lodge #16, A.F.&A.M.; Vandalia American Legion Post #95 (Chaplin); Vandalia Park Dist.-Athletic Director & Vandalia Swimming Pool Manager; Habitat For Humanity Advisor; Vandalia Lions Club; FAYCO Board; Fayette Co. Board; Local Carpenter and a WWII Army Veteran. He is survived by: Daughters - Janet Smith, Vandalia, IL; Barbara Behrends & Jim, Brownstown, IL & Joyce Pennington, Vandalia, IL; 9 Grandchildren; 16 Great Grandchildren & 6 Great Great Grandchildren & 1 sister, Vivian Steinbauth, Winston Salem, N.C. Preceded in death by: Parents; Son - William R. Hewitt; Daughter - Dr. Becky Hewitt; 2 Grandchildren and 1 Great Grandchild.
