John Henry Swain, age 79, of Vandalia, IL passed away Friday, June 19, 2026 at St. John's Hospital in Springfield, IL.

John was born July 28, 1946 in Harlan, KY, the son of Bill and Chloe (Mitchell) Swain. He married Donna K. Hess on September 20, 1969 in Robinson, IL. She passed away on April 21, 2016. John served his country in the United States Marine Corps during the Vietnam War. He worked as a food service supervisor at the Vandalia Correctional Center. John was an avid golfer and was a member of the Vandalia Moose Lodge #1447. He was a loving husband, father, and grandfather. He loved his family and cherished the time he got to spend with them.

He is survived by his children, Michelle (Eric) Holman, Johnny (Danielle) Swain, and Brian (Abbey) Swain; grandchildren, Ashley (Brady), Kelsey (Daniel), Lexie, Tanner (Laney), Kaylin, Breann (Drew), and Alisha (Andrew); great grandchildren, Thelma, Lettie, Gideon, Desmond, and Kenny; siblings, Wanda, Opal, Billie, Bill, Margie, and Rita. 

He was preceded in death by his parents; wife; and siblings, Charles, Edith, Don, and Bobby.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 am on Saturday, June 27, 2026 at Bethel Baptist Church in Vandalia, IL with Pastor Joe Lawson officiating. Burial with military rites will follow at Green Hill Cemetery in Van Burensburg, IL. A visitation will be held prior to the service on Saturday, from 9:00 to 11:00 AM at the church.
