Services will be held at 11:00 AM, Tuesday, June 17, 2014, at St. James Lutheran Church, Vandalia,IL with Pastor Krista Stokke officiating. Burial will follow at Fairlawn Cemetery, Vandalia, IL. Visitation will be held from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM, Monday, June 16, 2014 and 10:00 AM-11:00 AM (1 hr. before service), Tuesday, June 17, 2014, all at St. James Lutheran Church,Vandalia, IL. Memorials: St. James Lutheran Church. He was born November 18, 1926, in Vandalia, IL, the son of J Carl & Lena (Bunch) Smith. Married Nellie Gertrude "Trudy" Metzger on June 12, 1949, Vandalia, IL. She passed away February 3, 2005. He was retired from U.S. Steel, Past Director of Fayette County E.S.D.A. and a World War II Navy Veteran. A member of St. James Lutheran Church, Temperance Lodge # 16 A. F. & A. M., Crawford-Hale Post # 95 American Legion, Vandalia Moose Lodge # 1447 and Ainad Temple Shrine. He is survived by: Son - Jay Gary Smith & Diana Lockart, Vandalia, IL; Daughters - Vicky Alender & Jeff, Atlanta, GA,, Sarah Gust & Dr. David Edgell, Greenville, NC and Jenny Smith & Rich Davis, Kansas City, MO; Grandchildren - Andy, Rodney, Chris, Arik & Bethany; Great Grandchildren- Carson, Cameron, Adam, Sadie, Maddox, Jaxon, Ty, Olivia and Gwendolyn.
