Obituary

Ivan Lee Witbracht, 93 of Vandalia, IL went to be with his Lord and Savior at 9:40PM, Thursday, December 29, 2011, in Fayette County Hospital Long Term Care. Visitation will be held from 6-8 PM on Tuesday, January 3, 2012 and 9:30-10:30 AM, Wednesday, January 4, 2012 (1 hour before service) both at First United Methodist Church, Vandalia, IL. The Funeral service will be at 10:30 AM on Wednesday, January 4, 2012 at the First United Methodist Church, Vandalia, IL. Burial will follow at Fairlawn Cemetery in Vandalia, IL. Dr. Roger Grimmett will be officiating. Memorials are requested to the First United Methodist Church Music Department in Vandalia, IL and/or Donor's Choice. Ivan was born on August 5, 1918 in Randolph County, IL, the son of James A. and Mary L. (Wente) Witbracht. He married Jeanne Louise Froeschle on July 6, 1946 and they recently celebrated their 65th anniversary. Jeanne passed away December 18, 2011. Ivan was a devoted and loving father of four children and a well-respected member of the St. Elmo and Vandalia communities. While in St. Elmo, he was a grade school teacher, principal, schools administrator and a member of the First United Methodist Church where he was a Sunday School teacher and worked with the Cub Scouts. He was selected to be a teacher and principal at a DoD school in Captieux, France, where he assisted in the US Army Post Chapel and scouting programs. Returning to Vandalia, he was the Assistant County Superintendent of Schools, the education administrator at the Vandalia Correctional Center where he established and administered the first prison pilot school program in Illinois. Ivan was the School Attendance Officer for Fayette, Bond and Effingham Counties. He was a member of the First United Methodist Church, a charter member of Operation Outing and assisted with the Evergreen Outreach program. Ivan was active in the Illinois Educators Association and served many through the Boy Scouts and Meals on Wheels Programs. He is survived by daughters, Barbara McCart and Bob of Vandalia, IL; Lynn O'Hara & David of Colleyville, TX; Sue Miller & Eric of Shobonier, IL; son, I. Lee Witbracht & Valerie of Madison, AL; 14 Grandchildren and 20 Great Grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, wife and sister, Marion (Witbracht) Meierhoff.
