Charles J. "Chuck" Metzger Jr., 101, of Vandalia, IL, died on Saturday, February 23, 2013, at Fayette Co. Hospital, LTC in Vandalia, IL. Services will be held at 2:00 PM, Thursday, February 28, 2013, at Miller Funeral Home, Vandalia, IL , with the Rev. Krista Stokke officiating. Burial with Military Rites will follow at Fairlawn Cemetery, in Vandalia, IL. Visitation will be held from 12:00 Noon to 2:00 PM Thursday, February 28, 2013, at Miller Funeral Home, Vandalia, IL. Memorials: St. James Lutheran Church, Vandalia, IL. He was born on December 17, 1911, in Shobonier, IL, the son of Charles John "C.J." and Myrtle L. (Cowger) Metzger Sr. He married Leta Madelyn Abbott on August 21, 1937, in Vandalia. Madelyn passed away on November 29, 2004. Chuck was a member of St. James Lutheran Church; Temperance Lodge #16, A.F.A.M., Vandalia York Rite Bodies; Ainad Temple Shrine; VFW Post 3862; American Legion Post #95; Vandalia Moose Lodge #1447; Fayette County Farm Bureau; Former Fayette County Republician Chairman, WW II Navy Veteran serving on the Battleship USS Colorado and earning 4 battle stars. He was A Grain Farmer for over 40 years and former owner of Metzger's Cafe. He also loved to travel, spending winters in the Texas Valley. He is survived by Sons: John Metzger & Paula, Decatur, IL, Bob Metzger & Marylin, St. Charles, MO.; Daughter: Abby Lang & Lonnie, Salem, IL; 8 Grandchildren; many Great Grandchildren; and many extended family members. Preceded in death by Parents; Step-Mother, Helen Bailey Metzger; Half Brother, John William Metzger; and Wife.
