Carolyn Dee Koonce, age 77, of Vandalia, Illinois, passed away on Tuesday, April 7, 2026 at her home. She was born on February 10, 1949, in St. Elmo, Illinois, to Jay Dee and Lara Effie (Vaughn) Harnden.

Carolyn married Sam Koonce on March 7, 1981 in Vandalia, IL. Together they shared 45 years of marriage. Carolyn retired from Brockway, as an assistant supervisor. Carolyn loved her family and her grandchildren and great grandchildren were her pride and joy.

Carolyn is survived by her husband; Sam, sons; Lee (Crystal) Jones of Vandalia, IL, Darrin Koonce of Greenville, IL, daughters; Ginger (Todd) Hamilton of Vandalia, IL, Christine (Gary) Headley of Greenville, MI, grandchildren; Nichole (Lance), Jayden, Jarrett, Emma, Steven, Tyler, great grandchildren; Oliver and Isabella.

She was preceded in death by her parents and brother; Melvin McCoy.

Graveside services will be held at 11:00 AM on Saturday, April 25, 2026 at Fairlawn Cemetery in Vandalia, IL with Rev. Joe Lawson officiating. Family and friends may begin gathering at 10:30 AM at the cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Fayette County Health Dept. Hospice and/or Fresh Start through St. James Lutheran Church. Miller Funeral Home, Vandalia, IL is in charge of arrangements.
