William Chappel Obituary

William E. "Ernie" Chappel, 66, of Ramsey, Illinois, formerly of Vandalia and Greenville, passed away Wednesday, January 25, 2017, at his home in Ramsey, IL.

Memorial Services will be held at 1:00 PM, Saturday, January 28, 2017, at Unity Baptist Church, Vandalia, with Rev. Joe Lawson, officiating. Private Family Burial will be accorded. Visitation will be held from 10:00 AM to 1:00 PM, Saturday, January 28, 2017, at Unity Baptist Church, Vandalia, IL. Memorials: Fayette Co. YMCA; Kaskaskia College-Vandalia Branch; and/or Vandalia Food Pantry.

He was born September 8, 1950, in Springfield, IL, the son of William Lenval & Mary Louise (Lucco) Chappel and grew up on a farm near Pocahontas. Married Tamara D. Meador-Lape March 26, 1999, in Vandalia, IL. Ernie was affiliated with Metro Church. He was current Board of Director and past President and CEO of The First National Bank, Vandalia, IL. He lists agriculture as his "hobby" and was involved with the family farm west of Greenville, IL. When time permitted he farmed his own land.

He was a graduate of Pocahontas/Grant Fork Grade School; Highland High School, 1968; U of I, 1972 with a BS; SIUE, 1978 with a Masters of Business Administration; and a member of Alpha Gamma Rho Fraternity.

Ernie began his banking career in 1971 with a part time job of wrapping coins in the basement of Champaign National Bank. His first full time position in banking was with First National Bank (now First Bank) in Greenville, IL. In 1978, he moved to Vandalia, IL and was named Senior Vice President of Farmers and Merchants Bank becoming President in 1981. When the bank sold, 1984 he remained as president of both Vandalia and Greenville Banks. In 1990, he resigned and became president of First National Bank in Vandalia, IL.

We was active in various community activities: Rotary Club, Fayette County
Family YMCA, Chamber of Commerce, Economic Development, Park District, I-70 Community Development Corp, all of Vandalia, IL. Other activities include: Kaskaskia College Foundation-co-chair for their capital campaign for the new satellite campus in Vandalia, Greenville Regional Hospital Board of Directors, CBAI and St. Louis Federal Reserve Board of Directors.

He is survived by: Wife - Tammy Chappel, Ramsey, IL; Children - Christopher "Chris" J. Chappel & Beth, Maryville, IL, William Ryan Chappel, Vandalia, IL, Melissa D. Lounsbury & Ken, Winfield, IL, Megan K. Miller & Kyle, Aurora, IL, Lesley L. Lape, Riverview, FL and Adam E. Lape, St. Petersburg, FL; Grandchildren - Jack, Dylan, Elijah, Lydia, Brynley, Jaelyn & Peyton + 1 on-the-way; Sisters - Gena Moore & Jeff and Cari Outman & Jeff, all of Greenville, IL.

Preceded in death by: Parents; Sister - Cynthia "Cindy" K. Chappel.
